Top amateurs face off in Mashonaland West

take part in the Mashonaland West Amateur Championship that tees of at the Cam and Motor Golf Club in Eiffel Flats tomorrow.
The two golfers have won the opening two amateur tournaments played so far on the Zimbabwe Golf Association tour.
Nguru won the Julius Robinson Trophy at Wingate Golf Club in January while Ncube lifted the Dugmore event at Bulawayo.
The third amateur tournament is likely to draw several top amateur golfers from across the country and the Zimbabwe Golf Association secretary Joe Sithole expects a big field for the tournament.
“We are looking forward to a field of about 90 golfers to converge Kadoma tomorrow morning. The tournament is the third and very few people need not miss it, as they need the points for the order of merit.
“Mashonaland West amateur championship will be played over 76 with the first 36-holes at Cam and Motor before we move to Kadoma Golf Club for the final 36-holes.
“The ZGA calendar is going on well and we hope to have exciting games this weekend,” Sithole said.
The likely absence of top amateur Scott Vincent in the tournaments has opened up competition as we can see by the first two events.
The tournament was last year won by Vincent who has not been active this year. Vincent went on a winning spree last year and succumbed to his first defeat in the eighth tournament of the season when he lost to Barry Painting in Mutare.
Vincent managed to win most of the local amateur tournaments last year but has decided to take part in South African amateur tournaments.
The golfer got a scholarship has been taking part in the more challenging South African amateur championship for the six months that are left before his departure.
The departure of Vincent has left a huge opening on the amateur championship with the first two tournaments having been won by two people.
The race for the Mashonaland West amateur championship is wide open, as the new season shows no consistence from the golfers.
If Nguru and Ncube are to face tough competition it could come from Ray Badenhoist, Benjamin-Follet Smith and several others who did well in the first two tournaments.
Badernhoist came second on both tournaments and may see his chance coming at this tournament.
