Top Kenya athletics coach for autumn camp

TOP Kenyan athletics coach Edward Muema Munguti has been confirmed as the keynote speaker in the inaugural Higher and Tertiary Education Autumn Sports Management Camp scheduled for Great Zimbabwe next month.

The three-day camp is being organised by the Sports Leadersa Institute of Zimbabwe (Sliz) and will run from 26 to 28 May.

Munguti a holder of a Bachelor of Education Degree from Kenyatta University and a post graduate diploma in Sports Administration a is a committee member in the African Sports Management Association (ASMA).

He will address delegates that will include tertiary and higher education institutionsa principals, vice-principals, deans of students and heads of sports departments on their role in sports management in line with the new education curriculum. Russell Mhiribidi, the Sliz director, said the camp would deal with the new curriculum, which includes sport as an examinable subject.

a?Wellness and active lifestyle is what the Government is encouraging and as Sliz weave seen it proper to organise a workshop for higher and tertiary education institutions so that we address a number of issues.

a?Remember, the teachers who teach pupils physical education and sport come from these institutions, so itas prudent that we interact with them on matters to do with sports management issues,a? said Mhiribidi.

He said they would also highlight the importance of setting up vibrant university sporting leagues.

a?Weare of the view that universities and colleges are the zenith of sports development and as such there is a need to have vibrant leagues for different sporting disciplines. Universities and tertiary education institutions have some of the best sporting facilities for use in league programmes instead of just having festivals.

a?It is also possible for these institutions to get sound sponsorships from strategic partners just like what happens across the Limpopo where South Africa has vibrant university leagues,a? said Mhiribidi.
