ALICK Macheso has a staff compliment of 32 people and the sungura superstar takes care of an extended family, which includes former band members.
Macheso has been described as one of the best employers on the local musical scene. He launched his 13th album at Alex Sports Club in Harare on Friday night. His manager, Tich Makahamadze, told H-Metro that the band’s staff compliment currently stands at 32.
“The band is not giving salaries to 32 members, we have former band members, and less privileged members of our communities, who are also feeding from the same purse. Alick Macheso has been doing a lot in communities when he is off the stage. Ukaenda kuChitungwiza kune nzvimbo inonzi kwaMacheso kwaakawanira chikwata cheband nzvimbo dzekugara. He wanted all his band members to be landlords instead of being tenants.”
A number of local musicians, dancers and sound engineers confirmed that Macheso takes care of the welfare of his band members and those who are hired to work for him. On Friday night, Macheso took to the stage from midnight and played until dawn. His band members were all dressed in colourful attire as they launched their latest album, “Kupa Kuturika.
One of his fans, Mai Noku, told H-Metro: “The band members, including Baba Shero, are looking good in their attire. Zvakarongeka, to say the least. The stage is full, it seems Baba Shero employs a big number of people who are feeding their families from what they earn from being part of this band. Guitarists, dancers, backing vocalists, the drummer, sound engineers, bouncers and management are all part of the team and they all must be paid.” (H-Metro)
