adminThe committee was launched in Victoria Falls yesterday by the inter-ministerial committee on UNWTO 2013 led by the Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Retired Colonel Christian Katsande.
Announcing the committee, permanent secretary in the ministry of Transport, Communication and Infrastructure Development Mr Partson Mbiriri said there would be two committees on the ground, that is the Provincial (Matabeleland North) and District (Hwange West) committees which he said would feed to the sub committees at the national level.
“The Governor, Thokozile Mathuthu, heads the provincial committee but the Provincial Administrator will chair at technical level. Other members of the provincial committee include, the provincial planner, provincial education director, provincial managers from the departments of immigration, public works, CMED, roads, provincial information officer, Zinwa Gwayi catchment manager, Parks and Wildlife Management Authority regional manager and the provincial medical director,” he said.
Mr Mbiriri said the district committee would be headed by the district administrator.
“The DA will chair at the district level and other members are the education officer, CMED, Victoria Falls Town Clerk, Hwange Rural District Council chief executive officer, Zimra, immigration, parks and Zesa,” said Mr Mbiriri.
Loc would consist of the following sub-committees, transport, health, environmental, security, infrastructural development, media, information and publicity among others.
Rtd Col Katsande thanked the interim committee that was led by the Mayor of Victoria Falls, Councillor Nkosilathi Jiyane, for having laid the ground. “We have settled for the provincial and district committees since this
event will cause development of the whole province. The Mayor is not directly in the committee because the site where we are going to construct the convention centre is not under the jurisdiction of the local authority but rather is State land,” he said.
Zimbabwe and Zambia won the bid to co-host the 2013 UNWTO Assembly, to be held in Victoria Falls and Livingstone respectively.
The General Assembly is the supreme organ of the UNWTO and its ordinary sessions, held every two years, are attended by delegates of the full and associate members, as well as representatives of the business council.
The event would bring delegates from 176 countries to the Victoria Falls.
