Tourist arrivals increase

best destinations in the world, an official has.

Over the past decade of economic meltdown, arrivals plunged to an all time low as potential visitors took a cue from the Western media, which was portraying the country as unstable. But following the formation of the inclusive Government in 2009, arrivals have been on the rise. Zimbabwe Tourism Authority head of public relations and corporate communications manager Mr Sugar Chagonda said the increase was also in line with the jump in arrivals currently being experienced globally.

The growth of the sector, as indicated by improving arrivals, was also stimulated by the prevailing macro-economic stability which the adoption of multiple foreign currencies ushered in.
“The continued growth in arrivals can be attributed to the increased confidence in Zimbabwe as a safe tourist destination which has come through continued marketing efforts by the ZTA,” said Mr Chagonda.

During the first half of last year, Zimbabwe recorded 657 302 tourist arrivals compared to 568 706 during the same period the previous yearArrivals from all regions increased with the greatest percentage being recorded from the Middle East followed by Asia. – New Ziana.

Mr Chagonda said accommodation utilisation was also expected to rise following stabilisation of the economy and the demand resulting from the expected increase in arrivals in 2011.
Average hotel room occupancy level rose from 35 percent to 38 percent in the first half of 2011 while average bed occupancy level fell from 31 percent to 30 percent.
Since 2009, arrivals from the West have markedly improved, as Western countries softened their stance against the country following formation of the inclusive government. – New Ziana.
