The tourism sector has shown marked improvement over the past two months, raising hopes that it will contribute significantly to the country’s economy, a Cabinet minister has said. Addressing a zanu-pf inter-district meeting in Chinhoyi at the weekend, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Prisca Mupfumira said the country’s source markets have responded favourably to the new dispensation.
“The new dispensation, which was brought as result of military intervention to restore our lost legacy, has put Zimbabwe back on its feet and has affected our industry pos- itively.
“Many nations now have trust in Zimbabwe as we demonstrated an act of maturity and unity during the freedom march of November 18 last year, which saw the ouster of the former president (Robert) Mugabe,” said Minister Mupfumira.
“The number of people visiting Zimbabwe has improved in the past two months and a survey indicates that there will be great improvements soon.”
zanu-pf’s National Secretary for Environment and Tourism also urged Makonde District to leverage on domestic tourism initiatives to benefit financially.
“A number of tourists are interested in knowing much about our ways of life as Zimbabweans; so let’s take this opportunity to earn some money.
“For instance, in Masvingo, villagers are making various souvenirs that they sell to tourists. Other groups have even embarked on preparing traditional food which they also sell to the tourists.”
Minister Mupfumira said people in Makonde can also take advantage of the Chinhoyi Caves to showcase their wares.
“Every district should have a cultural village or a place that tells more of our personal lives as Zimbabwe,” she said.
