VICTORIA FALLS – One of the 32 tourists who were involved in an accident with a goods train in Victoria Falls last Tuesday has died. The tourist, whose name and nationality are yet to be released by police, died while receiving treatment at a South African health centre on Wednesday.

National Railways of Zimbabwe spokesperson Mr Fanuel Masikati told The Sunday Mail:

“Out of the 20 tourists injured, 18 were treated for minor injuries and discharged while two who were seriously injured were flown to South Africa for specialist medical attention.

“Information just received confirms that one of the seriously injured persons who had been flown for further treatment has since passed on. We wish to express our deepest sympathy and condolences on the sad loss. Despite the unfortunate incident, the NRZ continues to play its pivotal role of promoting the growth and development of tourism in Zimbabwe by upholding and observing safety in all its operations as well as preserving the sanctity of human life.”

The tourists, believed to be of different nationalities, were riding on a tram when the goods train rammed into them at Victoria Falls Station. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.
