TRAGEDY has struck a Norton family after a four-year-old boy drowned on Tuesday after falling in a trench at Forit Stands behind Pagogo Shopping Centre.
Acting Provincial Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Effort Chapoto, told H- Metro that the boy and other children were playing in a trench flooded with water.
“The now deceased jumped into the trench which is about 1,5 metres deep and he drowned,” said Ass Insp Chapoto.
“The five-year-old (his friend) then swiftly rushed home and informed his mother Christiona Shawarai (45) who in turn informed the father of the deceased Thomas Manyika (33).”
Ass Insp Chapoto said Manyika, with the help of other neighbours, conducted a search but could not retrieve the body.
He said police then attended the scene and the body was taken to Norton Hospital awaiting postmortem.
Ass Insp Chapoto said investigations were in progress.
He said the police were worried about the increase in cases of drowning in the province.
“The continuous incessant rains mean more measures should be taken to avoid such incidents or else we will lose more lives,” said Ass Insp Chapoto.
He urged parents to always monitor their kids and try to ensure that they are always safe.
