A DARK cloud hangs over Mhonda Village in Seke, after a 7-month-old baby tragically drowned in a 20-litre bucket in a heartbreaking accident that has left the community reeling.
According to a report by the police on X, the freak incident occurred on 6 April 2025, when the infant’s mother stepped out to do household chores, leaving the baby sleeping on the bed.
But what was meant to be a few quiet moments turned into a mother’s worst nightmare.
It is suspected the baby woke up, rolled off the bed and fell headfirst into a bucket of water, which had been left in the room.
By the time the mother returned, it was too late — her little one had drowned.
Police confirmed the devastating news in a statement and urged caregivers to be extra cautious with infants.
“We urge parents and guardians to ensure the safety of their children at all times and to keep hazardous items, including open containers with water, out of children’s reach,” said the ZRP.
The incident has served as a chilling reminder to never underestimate the dangers that everyday household items can pose to curious, crawling infants.
