A SLEEPY village was plunged into mourning after a 1-year-5-month-old baby girl perished in a raging fire that gutted a family hut in Nkayi District on 3 April 2025.
The heart-breaking incident occurred while the child’s mother had briefly left her sleeping alone on a bed to escort her older son to school at Village 3, Drommoland, Inyathi.
By the time neighbours noticed thick smoke curling from the homestead, it was too late to save the toddler. The hut was engulfed in flames, reducing everything inside to ashes — including the innocent life lost too soon.
Police have launched a full investigation to uncover what sparked the fire, as the cause remains a mystery.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating a fatal fire incident which claimed the life of a baby girl… The cause of the fire is yet to be established,” said police in a statement.
The tragic event has left the local community shocked and shattered, with villagers questioning how something so ordinary — a school drop-off — could end in such horror.
