CHAOS erupted just outside Gwanda Town this morning when a Bulawayo-Beitbridge Railway (BBR) goods train smashed into a Rovos Rail passenger train packed with tourists en route to Victoria Falls.

The horrific crash happened in the Hantinya area and left several people injured, mostly crew members from both trains.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, with the Gwanda Fire Brigade pulling trapped passengers from the wreckage of the Rovos train, which had crossed into Zimbabwe from South Africa.
Wailing sirens, shattered glass, and shocked tourists painted a grim picture of what was supposed to be a luxury rail adventure.
All the injured were rushed to Gwanda Provincial Hospital. Their conditions remain unknown.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
More drama as it unfolds…
