IN the quest to promote green champions, I visited Stepping Stones Clinic, which is located along Josiah Tongogara Avenue in Harare.
The facility provides treatment for various ailments.
What is striking is how those behind the health centre have blended nature with the concrete jungle. There are many aspects to consider when living in a modern concrete jungle, where one can use succulents to transform the landscape.
Succulents are perfect for urban landscaping as they need very little water and care.

They comprise a good variety of plants that come in many colours, shapes and sizes.
Their leaves can form a rhythmic pattern. Succulents can be grown on windowsills and rooftops, as well as in coffee cans and hanging baskets. Apparently, spending time around plants reduces stress and boosts the immune system.
The possibilities for landscaping may include a hanging wall or ceiling.
Another way of transforming spaces is by using repetitive colours and patterns, whilst playing around with different textures.

Instead of planting your succulents, also sculpt the terrain.
Mounded soil is more interesting than flat terrain.
Also try to group plants with different heights and sizes whilst those with similar moisture needs are in the same category.
Try adding a fountain in your succulent garden as this will attract birds and insects.
Use different rock colours to mulch the soil as this will add variety and intrigue.
Indeed, succulents can tame a concrete jungle and create a unique environment in both indoor and outdoor spaces, which need very minimum maintenance.
