Transport Minister Felix Mhona mourns 13 victims of fatal road accidents, urges enhanced road safety

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has sent a condolence message to the families of 13 people who died in separate road accidents on Wednesday.

A total of 10 people died when a Honda Fit they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision at the 185km peg along the Harare—Nyamapanda Road.

In another road traffic accident which occurred along the Harare—Mutare Road, at the 32.5km peg, three people died while 15 others were injured when a commuter omnibus overturned after a tyre burst.

“The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development expresses its deepest sorrow following two tragic road traffic crashes on Wednesday, 17 December 2025, Minister Mhona said in a statement.

“At the 185km peg along the Harare—Nyamapanda Road, ten people lost their lives in a head-on collision. On the Harare—Mutare Road, at the 32.5km peg, three more people perished and fifteen others were injured when a commuter omnibus overturned after a tyre burst.

“Survivors are receiving medical care and the Ministry is monitoring their recovery. On behalf of the Ministry and the Government, we extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

He said as the festive season approaches, these tragedies are a reminder to all transport operators, motorists and the public to strictly observe road traffic rules.

“Overloading and reckless driving will not be tolerated and the Ministry will intensify enforcement to safeguard the commuting public.

“The Second Republic remains committed to strengthening road safety through robust legal, policy, and administrative measures,” Minister Mhona said.
