A HARARE trio appeared in court yesterday for dealing in counterfeit ivory.

Believe Murowa, Absolom Murenza and Gibson Chitetere appeared before Harare magistrate Tafadzwa Miti on accusations of possessing articles of criminal use.

The court heard that on December 3, detectives from CID Minerals received a tip-off that the trio was in possession of ivory in Greencroft and were looking for buyers.

The police contacted Chitetere, who was the point man in the deal, and convinced him that they were potential buyers.

Chitetere agreed the price and directed them to Mabelreign where Murowa kept the fake ivory.

The three met with the potential buyer with the fake ivory in a white sack.

They got into the detective’s car and he summoned back-up leading to the trio’s arrest.

They asked the three to produce a permit authorising them to deal in ivory, and they failed.

Upon checking the ivory, the police discovered that it was counterfeit.
