Three Epworth robbers who terrorised taxi drivers in Harare and Marondera stealing their cash, valuables and their cars before giving the drivers a dollar each for transport were yesterday sent to jail for a combined 49 years. Blessing Makomborero Chiduke (25) Kudzai Matenha (27) and Philip Nyamayaro (20) pleaded guilty to robbery of motor vehicles charges when they appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mr Hoseah Mujaya.

Chiduke and Matenha will serve 18 years in prison each while Nyamayaro was sentenced to 13 years.

On March 10, Chiduke and Matenha hired a taxi in Harare pretending to be going to Hatfield. Nyamayaro waylaid the taxi at the destination. One of the robbers drove the vehicle while the other stole a mobile phone and $20. They later dumped the taxi driver along Chiremba Road and gave him a dollar for transport.

On the same day Matenha and Nyamayaro hired another taxi on the pretext of going to Hatfield. Chiduke waited at the destination. They stole the car and valuables and dumped the driver along Airport Road after giving him a dollar.

They robbed the third driver in Marondera using the same manner before they were arrested.
