A new trend of holding house-warming parties to celebrate the opening of newly built homes has taken Zimbabwe by storm. This trend has now extended to rural areas where high-standard structures are being constructed by locals living and working in the diaspora.

One such celebration will take place on August 12, as the Moyo family will host a grand bash to celebrate the opening of their homestead in Tsholotsho, Makhaza area. The event, set to start at 2pm, will be free for all.

The bash will feature various artistes entertaining the attendees, including rhumba artiste Clement Magwaza, Gobisani and Makhaza Giants, uMagwaba and the Pioneers, Aphiwe and Sobancane as well as Lucy da Poet. DJ Mapressa will serve as the MC for the day.

In an interview, homestead owner Cleopas Moyo shared his excitement for the event saying he is looking forward to relaxing and seeing the results of his hard work.

“To be where I am today, it’s because of God. I was born in Bulawayo, Old Pumula, where I attended Robert Sinyoka Primary School up to Grade Six. I was living with both my parents then but after my dad passed away, we had to relocate to the rural areas, my mother’s village in Tsholotsho.

“Things changed, life was hard and we couldn’t afford school uniforms and stationery. My mother was a vendor and the money she made was not enough, so I had to drop out of school,” he said.

After dropping out of school, Moyo relocated to South Africa in 2006 in pursuit of a better life and later got an opportunity to travel to Dubai, UAE.

“When I got to South Africa, it was not easy, but I managed. Later, I got an opportunity to travel to Dubai, and that’s when my life changed. For the first five years, I struggled and couldn’t secure a proper job. Fortunately, in 2016, I got a job, and in 2021, I decided to build my home, a dream I had since childhood,” he said.

Moyo said he felt the need to have a grand celebration since this is a significant achievement for him.

He also highlighted that as a way of giving back, he will be handing out stationery to all the children who will attend the event.

“Now that I’m done, I’ve decided to celebrate my achievements by having a grand opening of my home. On the day, I’ll also give stationery to the kids who’ll be present, for I have experienced the pain and struggle of going to school without the basic necessities,” he said.

DJ Mapressa said: “I’m happy to be part of the celebrations. All those who’ll come will be given food, drinks and even alcohol. Cleopas will also give the Makhaza Primary netball team a kit and balls,” said Mapressa.
