BULAWAYO Metropolitan Tuskers team captain John Nyumbu has set his sights on leading his side back to Logan Cup cricket glory when the 2016-17 season starts today.
Tuskers begin their hunt for glory in the four-day game with a home tie against Rhinos at Queens Sports Club.
Tuskers were runners-up to archrivals Harare Metropolitan Eagles last season.
A lot is expected from Tuskers who won the Logan Cup four times since the start of franchise cricket in 2009-2010 season.
Tuskers won the trophy for three consecutive seasons and last season they lost it to Eagles.
“At the start of every season we strive to better past performances and improve our game so that we win games leading to trophies. That desire to do better is still the same and we’re going out for everything on offer,” said Nyumbu.
The spin bowler sees no reason why his team will struggle in the 2016-17 season as they had near perfect preparations which left Tuskers players eager to play.
“I think we had one of the best preparations, firstly because most of the players are from Bulawayo which meant we had enough time together and secondly we had our guys training with the national team which trained for some time here Bulawayo. Our bowlers and batsmen did work with the national team, which I believe helped them a lot. Even the composition of our squad is balanced as it is a mixture of youngsters and experienced guys which presents a good selection headache for team selectors,” said Nyumbu.
Tuskers welcome back allrounder Sean Williams, pace bowler Njabulo Ncube and 20-year-old Ainsley Ndlovu in their squad. Besides the returning trio, some of Tuskers players expected to carry the Bulawayo side through are Richmund Mutumbami, Brian Chari, Christopher Mpofu, Tafara Mupariwa, Thabo Mboyi, Keith Dabengwa and Nyumbu.
