A DARK cloud hangs over Chimanimani and Penhalonga after two separate tragedies claimed four lives in one day.
Police confirmed that on 21 August 2025, two-year-old twin brothers Jacob and Lincoln Gono were burnt to death when a kitchen hut they were playing in caught fire at Gwasha Village, Chimanimani.
The boys’ mother had reportedly left them alone to dash to a nearby shop, leaving a pot of sweet potatoes cooking on the fireplace. By the time neighbours rushed to the scene, the hut was engulfed in flames and the toddlers could not be saved.
In another heart-wrenching incident, two artisanal miners, Solomon Mutisi (49) and Evidence Binde (29), died after a shaft they were working in collapsed at around 3AM at Plot 1102, Hawling Farm, Penhalonga.
The shaft, which was about six metres deep, caved in on the miners, trapping and killing them instantly.
Both tragedies have sent shockwaves through the affected communities, with police urging caution and vigilance to prevent avoidable loss of life.
