TWO people died on the spot in Rusape yesterday when a Honda Fit vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with Nissan UD truck.
The accident was attributed to speeding, and reckless driving on the part of the deceased Honda Fit driver only identified as Ishmael.
The passenger he was carrying, Mutsawashe Katsunge of Village E, Nyahukwe also died on the spot.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the accident, and said the truck driver, Rambanayi Makere (53) who was transporting 20 cattle escape unhurt.
“A male adult only identified as Ishmael was driving a Honda Fit vehicle towards Rusape along Rusape-Nyanga Highway. He had one passenger, Mutsawashe Katsunge, on board. Rambanayi Makere (53) of Mt Hampden was driving a Nissan UD truck carrying 20 cattle in the trailer.
“On approaching the 20km peg, Ishmael lost control of the vehicle, and encroached into Makere’s lane resulting in a head-on collision. The lorry dragged the Honda Fit for some meters. Occupants in the Honda Fit vehicle died on the spot, while Makere escaped unhurt.
“Ishmael and Katsunge sustained head injuries and multiple fractures all over their bodies. Their bodies were ferried to Rusape General Hospital for postmortem. Investigations are still in progress,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
