Two women appeared in court on Thursday for allegedly stealing people’s handbags in church. Violet Jaure (27) and Maria Kawa (35) were facing two counts of theft when they appeared before magistrate Ms Barbra Mateko.
The matter was further remanded to March 18 for judgment.
It is alleged that on May 27 last year, Jaure and Kawa hatched a plan to steal handbags from unsuspecting worshippers at an unnamed church in Harare.
They noticed a group of female worshippers who were practising choral music outside the church with their bags left unattended at the entrance.
Taking advantage of the security laxity at the church, the pair picked four handbags containing cellphones, bibles and personal particulars belonging to Sharon Ngoshi, Robisa Maravanyika, Concilia Pachikware and a laptop 655 belonging to Bernard Chi- randu.
After picking up the loot, the two entered the church hall and briefly sat, disguising themselves as worshippers, before leaving the church clandestinely.
