Sunday, has attracted two more entries from Uganda.
This year’s edition of the FIM Africa Motocross Championship is being organised by the Bogwheelers Club of Harare and it has already attracted a full house of 80 riders.
The riders will be drawn from five African countries – Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and the hosts Zimbabwe.
And according to Jim Perry, the chairman of the Bogwheelers Club, two-top Ugandan riders are among 36 foreign competitors who have entered for this big continental event.
“Entries for this event are now closed and I can officially confirm that we have received a total of 36 foreign entries – 18 from South Africa, 13 from Zambia, three from Kenya and two from Uganda. We Zimbabwe, as the hosts, are going to field the largest number of riders – 44 – and this will bring the total number of competitors to 80 which I think is a good field for a competition of such magnitude.
So, all is now set for the staging of the 2011 FIM Africa Motocross Championship on Sunday where we also expect a full house of local motorsport enthusiasts who will be come out to watch what promises to be an exciting international motocross event,” Perry said yesterday.
Zimbabwe have already picked a team for this event and it will be led by the talented young motocross rider Ashley Thixton and his young brother Cameron.
Other promising young riders such as Tristan Grainger, Tyler Mawarire, Regan Wasmuth, James Dean Harrison, Cole Bond, Damian de Sousa, Francois Swan, Kurt and Chanelle Greatorex, and Victoria van Breda are also in the Zimbabwe team for Sunday’s championship.
They will all be joined in that team on Sunday by two overseas-based Zimbabwean riders – Sean Mitchell and Ricky Jardim.
Mitchell and Jardim have both been riding in Europe where the former has been making a name for himself as a professional motocross rider in Belgium in the past couple of years. In fact, Mitchell was recently reported to have moved to the other side of Europe – England – where he is now riding under the Moto Vision Racing-Development. The 20-year-old rider was expected to return home “anytime” this week in time for this Sunday’s FIM Africa Motocross Championship where he should light up the scene with his exceptional riding skills.
Meanwhile, one of Sunday’s event organisers, Gary Grainger, said the foreign riders are expected to start coming in for the FIM Africa Motocross Championship from today.
“The foreign riders will start arriving tomorrow (today) and as always, we are going to have some very interesting competitors,” said Grainger, who has been part of the organising team that has been working tirelessly for the past six months, preparing for Sunday’s big continental motocross event.
Sunday’s event has also attracted a number of local sponsors who include petroleum companies Fuchs Silkolene and Ram Petroleum.
Transearth and Koala Park Abattoir have also chipped in with some sponsorship for this event whose entry fee will be US$5 per person.
