THE Department of Agritex in Umguza District is today holding a field day at the homestead of local farmer Mr Amen Zhou in Village 7B, Ward 6, as part of efforts to promote climate-smart agriculture.
Mr Zhou’s crop, planted across six plots, is expected to yield more than a tonne, demonstrating the potential of well-timed and properly managed farming practices under the Intwasa cropping system.
Running under the theme “Right timing, right variety, right management: The Intwasa advantage in maize production,” the event has attracted farmers, extension officers and key stakeholders eager to learn from practical, on-the-ground experiences.
Field days remain a cornerstone of agricultural extension services, providing farmers with hands-on exposure to improved farming methods. Through live demonstrations, participants gain insights into critical practices such as correct planting times, seed selection, soil management and pest control.
Agritex officials said such platforms are vital in strengthening knowledge transfer, particularly as farmers adapt to changing weather patterns.
By showcasing successful plots like Mr Zhou’s, farmers can better appreciate how adopting appropriate techniques can significantly improve yields and enhance household food security.
B
eyond technical learning, the field day also provides an opportunity for farmers to network, exchange ideas and build stronger community ties — key elements in driving sustainable agricultural growth.
