UMZWINGWANE community is set to observe a district-wide day of prayer for accident victims on Sunday 24 May 2026 following a series of tragic road accidents, including a recent explosion that claimed more than 12 lives in the district.
The initiative, led by the Member of National Assembly for Umzwingwane constituency Brigadier-General (Retired) Levi Mayihlome, seeks to unite residents in collective remembrance, healing, and spiritual reflection.
The explosion, which occured recently, has added to a growing toll of fatal accidents that have devastated families across the district.
“The Day of Prayer is not only intended as a memorial for those who have lost their lives in road traffic accidents but also as a platform to unite the community in seeking spiritual renewal. We want to urge the whole Umzingwane community to join us” said Brig Gen (Rtd) Mayihlome.
The event will take place at designated venues across the district, to be announced in due course.
In preparation, fraternal churches, working alongside the District Development Coordinator (DDC) and traditional leaders, have been tasked with developing a comprehensive logistics plan and programme.
This includes coordinating venues, structuring prayer sessions, and ensuring all key stakeholders are informed well in advance.
As the death toll from road accidents continues to rise nationally, Umzingwane’s initiative is part of a grassroots response aimed at confronting the crisis through both spiritual and communal action.
The day is expected to offer solace to grieving families and foster a renewed commitment to road safety.
