ACCRA. — Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed arrived in Accra early on Saturday as new head of the United Nations (UN) Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER), it has said. According to a Press release issued late on Saturday by the UNMEER office, Ahmed who takes over from Anthony Banbury will officially begin his duties this week, as new Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN from the mission headquarters here in the Ghanaian capital.
Welcoming him, outgoing head of mission, Banbury said.
“Even while we face a lot of hard work in the days, weeks and months ahead, it’s important to pause and think back to where we were when we started.”
He noted at a Town Hall Meeting of the UNMEER staff that there were predictions that there would be 1,4 million cases by the beginning of 2015. — Xinhua.
