MEN should undergo regular prostate cancer screening, an academic and medical expert has advised.
Addressing guests at a health and wellness workshop in Harare, Professor Hilda Matarira urged men to cooperate.
“For a long time, the focus in Zimbabwe has mainly been on women and the cancers that affect them such as cervical and breast cancer, but there is an increase in the number of prostate cancer cases in Zimbabwe.
“According to recent research, we noted that in men of African descent, 76 percent are likely to develop prostate cancer.
“Prostate cancer is the second most prevalent type of cancer in Zimbabwe,” she said.
Prof Matarira said the provision of early screening will help save lives of many.
“It is important to keep in mind that prostate cancer is still a deadly disease, and it is the leading cause of cancer deaths among men in Zimbabwe.
“Prostate cancer is 99 percent treatable if detected early.
“Prostate cancer has one of the highest survival rates of any cancer.
“Provision of this service will reduce the death rate from prostate cancer.”
