TOO often women walk out of the house a dreary mess. You bump into one and you’re thinking, wait, what happened there. Didn’t they look at themselves in the mirror before they stepped out, you wonder. Most women make fatal mistakes on the most important part of their bodies, the face. Your face is your billboard, right? That’s the first thing most people notice. It doesn’t matter who it is, they’re going to notice what you’ve done to your face.
A significant number of women wear make-up that doesn’t quite suite them. Instead of looking beautiful, they look cheap and awkward.
Fortunately, Vault Cosmetics – a make-up specialist company launches at Truworths in Bulawayo this afternoon and will be pampering women, showing them just how make-up should be worn. I’d say they couldn’t have launched at a better time as the city was in need of a make-over.
During the week, I had a chat over latte with Jackie Mgido, the brains behind Vault Cosmetics. Her message was clear and simple, make-up is just meant to enhance your facial features.
“Somebody has to understand why they’re wearing make-up. If you don’t understand why you’re wearing make-up, this is when a disaster happens.
“When you see people out there that look a bit awkward in make-up, it’s because they don’t understand why they’re doing what they’re doing,” Mgido said.
Mgido, who is also a professional make-up artiste based in the United States of America, said there were some people who did not need to apply make-up, especially foundation as all they needed were just a few enhancements.
“They’re some people that don’t need foundation but just some concealer under the eye, around the nasal fold and a little bit of powder, lip gloss and mascara to lift the eye and it’s done,” said Mgido.
Concealer, she said, is used to brighten up the face and “conceal” certain dark patches which drag down the face. Highlighter is used on the brow bone just to give the eye a lift.
“There’s a difference between a highlighter and a concealer. Your concealer should be the same pigment as your skin so that it blends. The highlighter should be three shades lighter than your skin.
“It’s all about colour, for example, orange covers brown, so your highlighter should have the right pigment to cover your flaws. The highlighter now is used to highlight either the brow bone and it can also be used on the cheeks to lift them up.
“But everybody has a natural highlight so the highlighter is just there to enhance your natural one,” Mgido said.
According to her, one must pay a lot of attention to their eyebrows when doing their faces.
“An eyebrow shape that one sees on someone else won’t necessarily work on them. People need to know that faces are different and what works on the other person won’t necessarily work on you.
“Women need to see a professional that understands the shape of their brows that matches with their eyes.”
She said some women only need to trim a few brows off while others will have to learn to pencil them in properly.
“That’s when women’s different ‘drawing’ abilities come out. Not everybody was born with a perfect brow to enhance their features so in trying to make them perfect, some women end up removing everything and face challenges trying to draw them back,” Mgido said.
Turning to mascara, Mgido said: “Mascara is really important because it brings out the eyes which are sunken most of the times. But there’s a disaster with lashes. People watch Beyonce and want lashes exactly like hers, but they don’t understand that she needs longer lashes to be visible on stage.
“Black people have curlier lashes, making it difficult to put in the mascara, but instead of using the whole brush, one needs to use the tip of the brush, from the inside going out.”
She urged women not to wear lashes on an everyday basis but to put them when going out for special occasions.
Mgido added that while using eyeliners seemed easy, people needed to know their eyes and how to apply the liner.
“If you have eyes that are really small, don’t wear liner under the eyes because you’ll end up with dark circles under the eye. But if you have big eyes, you can definitely put some line.
“If your eyes are small, you can consider wearing liner on top of the eye or use white or brown liner because it’s all about highlights and shadows,” said Jackie.
Asked if matching eye shadow and clothes is proper, which seems to be a common trend among many women, Mgido said that was a no as it was quite ancient.
“Matching clothes with eye shadow is so 1980. If you’re matching everything, it makes you look cheap, especially on the brow bone. People need to deflate that pressure and avoid doing so.”
She emphasised the need for classy women to desist wearing blue eye shadow which she said should be left for women of the night.
“The reason why women of the night wear blue eye shadow is because they want to be seen. Blue eye shadow never looks good on anybody with dark skin, it looks cheap because it doesn’t have red, it’s a solid blue which makes you look a bit tired.
“People should just throw away blue and silver eye shadows. Shimmer is also not advised around the brow bone especially in the day time and especially at work, your boss just won’t take you seriously,” Mgido said.
Lip stains, Mgido said, were the new convenient way of keeping the lips plush while lipstick was all about personality.
