Understanding suicide: Know the causes and warning signs

Suicide has become common in our society. This situation has led people to lose their beloved ones due to different reasons. Here are some facts about suicide.

Causes of suicide
When:-
• Someone goes through depression and falls to get support.
• One has anxiety disorder and fails to disclose her feelings on a particular issue.
• Someone has traumatic experiences which are not addressed.
• Failing to accept and deal with sexual orientation and not being accepted by the family or society.
• Sometimes being bullied and failing to get support and protection.
• One is subjected to domestic violence and feeling helpless and ununderstood.
• One is divorced, feels rejected and end of dating relationships
• Rejected pregnancies and or unwanted pregnancies.
• Someone abuses and acts under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
• Someone is under financial strain and falls to get support.

How to identify someone who is suicidal?

1. One can notice changes in behavior.
2. Withdrawal from family and friends.
3. Lack of interest in social life.
4. Feeling guilty, sad or worthless.
5. Usage of language eg ‘I am tired of life, I can’t take this anymore”
6. Taking risks, driving too fast, taking substance excessively, aimless walks at night.
7. Mood swings.

Some things to do when you have such a person:
• Get emergency help.
• Remove all dangerous items within the environment.
• Don’t leave the person alone.

Take suicidal statements seriously, have open and honest discussion about your concerns. Encourage the person to seek counselling or to talk to someone about their feelings.
