Donations towards victims of Cyclone Idai continue to pour in with the United Nations Development Programme in Zimbabwe (UNDP Zimbabwe) donating US$500 000 to assist in the recovery efforts.

In a statement UNDP Zimbabwe resident representative Mr Georges van Montfort said UNDP will provide specialist expertise in early recovery, drawing from its global pool of specialists who have experience in dealing with disasters of a similar magnitude

“This support allows us to work hand-in-hand with the affected communities to rebuild their lives and restore community infrastructure, with particular focus on making it climate proof to help avoid future disasters,” he said.

The United States government has also provided an additional US$2,5 million.

US Embassy Harare public affairs officer Mr Kenneth Wetzel said the contribution, made through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Office of Food for Peace, will support immediate food needs in the most affected areas of Manicaland.

Japan yesterday donated 300 tents, 320 jerry cans for water, 30 generators, eight water purification machines and water purifying chemicals.

Speaking after receiving the donation from Japan at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, Japanese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Toshiyuki Iwado said they were saddened by the tragedy.
