ORGANISERS of the 2024 Unforgettable Sevens Series have said that preparations for the eagerly anticipated fast paced rugby tournament are at full swing.
The 2024 edition of the tournament is scheduled for tomorrow at the home of rugby, Hartsfield Rugby Grounds with at least 16 teams – schools and clubs – battling it out in what promises to be an action packed day for the rugby faithful.
Fans can expect exhilarating action from primary and high school sevens, girls sevens and clubs, all competing in their respective categories.
A minimum of eight schools for the Under-16 and Under-18 age groups will be competing. In the senior men’s category, there will be eight clubs including Zvishavane Bulls, Kwekwe and Gweru and local clubs.
Saturday’s tournament will coincide with the Lui Corbi Under-13 festival finals where there will be teams from around Zimbabwe.
Tournament director Busani Ncube, said they are ready to go with preparations in full swing.
“Everything is set for Saturday. Competing teams have been hard at work and on the administration side, we have also been working around the clock to ensure that come Saturday, everything runs smoothly without any glitches.
“We are looking forward to a good day of rugby, starting from development up to club level. It is going to be an interesting tournament, therefore, we call on all rugby lovers to make way to Hartsfield as it will also be a family friendly environment,” said Ncube.
Ncube added that Saturday’s proceedings will play a massive role in the development of the game in the province while promoting gender equality.
“Organising tournaments for schools, clubs and girls is crucial for nurturing and developing rugby in Bulawayo. These events not only enhance player skills and competition levels but also help build a vibrant rugby community that can sustain growth for years to come,” said Ncube.
Unforgettable — represented by the legendary former Zimbabwe Sevens player and head coach Gilbert “Gidza” Nyamutsamba,are the tournament premier sponsors.
Nyamutsamba said they are looking forward to yet another successful event whose proceeds will go towards rejuvenating the main field at the home of rugby.
“Its all systems go. Everything is in place and we are eagerly looking forward to the successful hosting of this tournament. As alluded, this year, we are doing things differently. The biggest winner at the end of the day will be rugby as all proceeds are going towards resuscitating our main field and our development structures.
“We are looking at getting top soil and lawn for the A field while also giving to our grassroot to ensure that our youngsters have everything they need for their development into national team players for both men and women,” said Nyamutsamba.
He called on all the rugby faithfuls to grace the tournament.
“It’s going to be a good day of rugby. There will be quality play on display and we call on all sport lovers, not just rugby fans, to come through to Hartsfield and enjoy the games. It’s going to be fireworks,” said Nyamutsamba.
Schools from Harare, Plumtree, Shurugwi, Gweru, Matabeleland North and a number of local schools will be at the Lui Corbi festival.
There will also be academies, including Heitclif, Mbare and Western Suburbs as hosts. The Lui Corbi festival also sees the girl child have nine schools joining as they seek to empower them with a programme called safe and positive coaching pathway for girls in sport. It is empowered by Tafisa international and the SRC.
