MANCHESTER UNITED big shots are set to recommend Michael Carrick for the permanent manager’s job, according to reports.
An executive committee meeting is due to be held this week which could finally determine the future of the Old Trafford hot seat.
Interim boss Carrick has been a revelation since taking over in January, winning 12, drawing four and losing just two of his 18 Premier League games.
That incredible run has left United sitting pretty in third, assured of their Champions League status for next season and almost certain to finish as the best of the rest behind title challengers Arsenal and Manchester City.
According to The Athletic, United CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox have seen enough to give Carrick their full backing.
Berrada and Wilcox are expected to share their recommendation at the upcoming meeting with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who retains ultimate authority over sporting decisions.
United’s majority owners, the Glazer family, are reportedly happy to let Ratcliffe take the lead on football matters as the new era takes shape.
The Red Devils insist that nothing has been agreed yet.
But talks with Carrick over a long-term deal are expected to begin in the coming weeks.
United have been ramping up their plans for next season since making mathematically sure of Champions League qualification.
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery and outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola have reportedly been sounded out as candidates.
Emery has led Villa to the Europa League final and Iraola’s Cherries are on course to qualify for Europe.But United players and staff are understood to be confident that Carrick will be at the helm next term. Carrick, 44, made nearly 500 appearances as a United player and first took temporary charge of the team in 2021.
That ended after three games, despite Carrick overseeing two wins and a draw, as United turned to Ralf Rangnick.
Former Tottenham and West Ham star Carrick went on to manage Middlesbrough between 2022 and 2025.One of the standout features of Carrick’s United reign has been the reintegration of academy star Kobbie Mainoo.
The midfielder, 21, was frozen out by previous manager Ruben Amorim. But he has been a pillar of Carrick’s starting XI, earning himself a bumper new contract and fighting his way back into the England picture ahead of the World Cup.
And Mainoo has championed Carrick’s appointment.He said earlier this month:
