ZANU PF secretary-general Cde Jacob Mudenda yesterday said the historic 1987 Unity Accord marked the birth of a new Zimbabwe that was anchored on the enduring principle of national togetherness as espoused in the revolutionary Party’s motto.

In a message commemorating the 38th anniversary of the Unity Accord, Cde Mudenda underscored the need for the nation to take the opportunity to advance socio-economic transformation towards Vision 2030 as reflected in the Unity Accord’s spirit of patriotism, magnanimity and collective purpose.

The 1987 Unity Accord was signed by the late former President Robert Mugabe and the Vice President Joshua Nkomo, putting an end to several years of deep suspicion and conflict that divided the nationalist parties and liberation parties that won the country’s independence.

“The Unity Accord of 22nd December 1987 remains one of the most defining milestones in our nation’s history, marking the birth of a new Zimbabwe firmly anchored on the enduring principle of national unity under the guiding banner of Unity, Peace and Development, as espoused by our revolutionary Party’s motto,” Cde Mudenda said.

He saluted the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa for continuing to carry the torch of the Unity Accord under the mantra of “leaving no one and no place behind” under the continued inspiration of the late Cdes Mugabe and Nkomo.

“Zimbabwe salutes the Second Republic under the able leadership of His Excellency, the President, Dr ED Mnangagwa, for continuing to carry the torch of the Unity Accord under the Presidential mantra of leaving no one and no place behind – a clarion call for affirming the disabuse of regionalism and tribalism,” Cde Mudenda added.

Government yesterday reinforced the ZANU PF message, describing the Unity Accord as a landmark agreement which remains the bedrock of Zimbabwe’s peace and stability in its rich diversity and heritage.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said the Unity Accord paved way for reconciliation.

He called all Zimbabweans to rededicate themselves to building a harmonious, inclusive and prosperous Zimbabwe for all towards the realisation of an upper middle-income society by 2030.

“As we reflect on this milestone, we acknowledge the enduring benefits it bestowed upon our nation: lasting political stability, a foundation for economic development, and a strengthened sense of shared identity and purpose.

“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the principles of unity, equality, and cooperation in diversity,” Dr Muswere said.

The Unity Day, said Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe, is not “just a date on the calendar, but the triumph of dialogue and reconciliation”.

He said the day is a reminder of Zimbabwe’s shared values and the strength in diversity.

“As we celebrate the spirit of unity, let us honour the rich cultural heritage that binds us together as a nation, and acknowledge that our diversity is not a weakness to be exploited, but a mosaic of strength to be cherished,” Minister Kazembe said.

Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire said the Unity Day embodies the nation’s commitment to peace, reconciliation and a shared national purpose.

“We stand firmly with every young Zimbabwean in forging a future anchored in harmony, dignity and equal opportunities for all,” he said.

Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba said unity remains the bedrock underpinning the country’s national identity, urging citizens to “embrace peace, tolerance and cooperation” as the country moves towards the implementation of National Development Strategy (NDS2).”
