A Zambian woman, who had allegedly failed examinations at two different universities committed suicide by throwing herself into the Zambian side of Victoria Falls in Livingstone and her body was found on the Zimbabwean side. The incident has become the talk of Victoria Falls, with some speculating that she might have been murdered as the retrieval of her body was never publicised.
Police in Zimbabwe said no report was made.
However, witnesses confirm the body was retrieved from Rapid Four, on the Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi River.
“We have checked, we did not receive such a report. If the body was found on our side they would have obviously liaised before removing it,” said Police Officer Commanding Victoria Falls District, Chief Superintendent Jairos Chiwona.
Media reports in Zambia said police identified the 23-year-old former University of Botswana student as Carol Kanyembo of Dambwa North Extension, Livingstone.
She allegedly disappeared on Friday evening after texting her friends saying she intended to take her life because she had disappointed her parents. Her body was found on Tuesday.
She reportedly dumped her handbag and shoes at the point where she jumped into the mighty river and a note to her friends that she was disappointed with herself for letting her parents down by dropping out of university on two occasions after failing examinations.
She also failed examinations at a university in Namibia and dropped out, which is suspected to have traumatised her.
