members of the movement.
He said the movement was formed to inspire children between the ages of five and 14 to love their country and know their culture and environmental surroundings.
He said the 21st February Movement was a brainchild of the Zanu-PF Youth League to inspire children across the political divide.
Cde Shamu, however, said unlike the Youth League, the 21st February Movement was apolitical.
He said the movement does not discriminate children on the basis of politics or religious inclinations.
“They (children) should know their history at an early age but not to make the movement political so that a child is free to interact with others and know what is right and what is bad,” he said.
“The activities of the movement centred on education, cultural and environmental conservation.
“We did not say if a child is a member of the 21st February Movement he or she should be a member of the Youth League.”
The Media, Information and Publicity minister said at the formation of the movement, they had resolved to have programmes that run throughout the year.
The programmes should educate children on several issues such as child abuse, tourism and assisting in identifying talent among the children. Minister Shamu said President Mugabe, the movement’s patron, did not campaign for the post.
“For the children to learn they want a role model who is a person with qualities and characteristics that inspire them,” said Minister Shamu.
“We saw that in President Mugabe — his humility, his position against corruption and he is someone who is not greedy,” he said.
