A GANG of pistol-wielding robbers stormed a bank in Mt Darwin’s CBD and blasted their way into a safe, making off with US$700 000 and 2.4kg of gold.
The Hollywood-style robbery happened around 2AM on Wednesday, June 26, and has left the nation stunned.
According to a police statement posted on X, “Three unknown suspects, armed with pistols, attacked a security guard on duty and broke into the bank, blasting open a safe and stealing approximately US$700,000 and 2.4 kilogrammes of gold.”
The gang’s getaway trail has sparked a full-scale police manhunt as detectives scramble to piece together CCTV footage and leads.
Meanwhile, just a day earlier, another armed robbery rocked Old Nick Mine in Bulawayo. In that case, three gun-toting suspects pounced on three workers, made off with US$520 000 and two cellphones, and vanished into the night.
Police have since called on the public to help crack twin heists by reporting any suspicious activity or leads.
With the robbers still at large and more than US$1.2 million missing in under 48 hours, the pressure is on for law enforcement to track down the crooks.
