A 200 KVA transformer – with an estimated value of US$10 000 – belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) was on Wednesday stolen in Dangamvura Area 3 in Mutare.
The incident happened on May 21, and was discovered around 9am.
The theft posed significant dangers to the community and economy led to power outages and disrupted essential services, putting residents and utility workers at risk.
Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the incident came to light when Ms Faustina Chikuse (52), a loss control officer at ZETDC, received a report from the fault desk at Dangamvura filling station indicating a power outage in the area.
“On the same day, the ZESA fault team investigated and found that a 200 KVA transformer had been stolen from the Dangamvura S200 substation. The accused used an unknown object to remove the mounts, and the theft went unnoticed until the team’s arrival,” he said.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said police were informed and attended the scene.
No arrest or recoveries have been made yet.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the suspects to report to their nearest police station.
“We urge members of the community with information related to the case to report to the nearest police station, as this will be helpful in bringing the perpetrator to justice,” he said.
