The equipment, including diathermic machines and drugs, was sourced by the Lifeline Dolomites Italian community.
Speaking at the handover of the equipment worth US$400 000, special advisor on health to the President and Cabinet Dr Timothy Stamps said cervical cancer together with cardiac complications were two of the most neglected conditions which needed attention.
“Government is grateful for the gesture which is set to make the lives of our mothers and sisters better. Cervical cancer and cardiac conditions are two of the most neglected conditions which we believe with the coming in of the equipment will be greatly reduced,” he said.
In his address at the handover ceremony, Italian Ambassador Stefano Moscatelli bemoaned the death of women especially in Africa through cervical cancer complications. Co-ordinator of the Italian Community Dr Carlo Spanolli said plans were also at an advanced stage to fully equip an emergency cardio unit at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital.
“The programme’s vision is to give the same equipment to three other hospitals in the province so that women have easy access to screening and treatment services for cervical cancer,” he said.
