US$500 000 to repair schools

damaged by a storm.
The heavy rains also uprooted electricity and telephone poles in some parts of the district.
In an interview recently, council chief executive Mr Albert Mbedzi described the situation as critical.

He said most of the schools would require complete reconstruction.
Mr Mbedzi said council had completed a bill of quantities survey and is appealing for assistance.
“We need to repair them before the first rains. As a local authority we are incapacitated and we need to pull resources together to repair the schools and clinics.”

He said the buildings at the institution had their roofs and windows blown off during the storm early this month.
The affected schools are Tshikwalakwala, Chipise, Chituripasi, Chabili, Chapongwe, Nuli, Malibeng and Swereki Primary Schools.

The storms also affected Masera and Makhakavhule clinics.
Mr Mbedzi said the buildings affected were built a long time ago before Zimbabwe’s independence.

“In previous circumstances, we tried to repair the damage with the assistance of the parents, but most of them are finding it difficult in the current economic situation.
“Our main challenge is that they need reconstruction, especially those constructed during the colonial era.”
