adminThough recently the media has been awash with talk that Utakataka Express’ leading duo of chanter Shiga Shiga and bassist Spencer Kumbuyani might be leaving the band, Shiga Shiga said he will be making it to Habane.
In an interview, the new band manager Suko Dube confirmed the fact that Shiga Shiga and Spencer are packing their bags soon after their debt has been cleared. The band is promising fireworks despite the anticipated split.
“We are going to perform in Esigodini this coming Saturday. I can confirm that Shiga Shiga and Spencer are to leave the band, but rest be assured everything is under control.
“We have been receiving numerous calls of people wishing to come for auditions from all over the country and I really must say this is a clear indication that we will cope without them,” said Suko.
He added that people should come out in their numbers to see the “Young Igwee” in action, as they will be belting new and old hits from his father’s wide selection.
In a separate interview, Shiga Shiga said he was just waiting for the Habane Show after which he will think of his future with Utakataka Express.
“I will be part of the band to perform at Habane in Esigodini.
“I will think about the next step afterwards,” he said
There had been reports that the two were leaving for Energy Mutodi’s Real Sounds of Africa.
It is rumoured that Mutodi has been splashing money to lure the two who many sungura followers believe are holding Utakataka Express together following the death of Tongai.
However, Mutodi’s said there was no room for the duo in Real Sounds of Africa.
With Peter being a novice in the industry, it is widely accepted that he needs the help and guidance of Shiga and Spencer to stay in the ‘game’.
“Let me firstly elaborate that my band does not have a vacancy for anyone who might emerge from any band or of any charisma.
“I want the nation to know that Shiga Shiga has been knocking on my door persistently though honestly. He first approached my band members, my manager and finally myself seeking to join my group.
“I’ve been telling him that there is no vacancy, infact dismissing them within a conversation of less than a minute because it pained and still pains me to absorb anyone from an infant-led band like Utakataka Express,” he was quoted as saying in a local tabloid.
