The “Strategic Framework for UZ” programme will involve former students, the private sector, civil society, the Diaspora and Government pooling resources for the sponsoring of construction projects, exchange programmes, professor-ships and the procurement of furniture.
The institution has been beset by a number of problems including staff shortages and strikes as well as water shortages that prompted authorities to shut down halls of residence, prejudicing thousands of learners in the process.
“We are also advocating African philanthropy where Africans give back to their communities.
“Africans have for long been recipients of donations but we should also learn to give back to the community using the University of Zimbabwe as the starting point,” he said.
It is envisaged that the programme will spread to schools, hospitals and other institutions.
Government ministers, vice-chancellors of the country’s universities, captains of industry, civil society, among other stakeholders are expected to attend the launch.
