UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe (UZ) Sign Language students embarked on a community outreach programme at Zimbabwe Deaf Trust in Glendale to promote awareness and foster inclusivity within communities.
The event showcased dramas, speeches, poems and songs performed in Sign Language.
Speaking at the event, UZ Sign Language lecturer, Tawanda Matende, said there is need to bridge the communication gap between the deaf and hearing communities especially among youths so as to embrace diversity.
“Sign Language is more than just a means of communication, it is a rich and vibrant form of expression that transcends barriers, fosters connections and empowers individuals.
“It is a language of the heart, spoken through the hands and understood by the soul. In a world where words often fall short, it stands as a testament to the boundless creativity and resilience of the human spirit.
“The deaf community is a shining example of strength, unity, and perseverance. This community has faced challenges and adversity yet it has thrived, blossomed, and enriched our society in countless ways.
“They remind us that diversity is not just something to be tolerated but celebrated and embraced.
“Sign Language is not just for the deaf, it is for all of us. It is a bridge that connects us, a language that unites us and a celebration of the beauty of human diversity.
“Together, let us continue to support and uplift the deaf community and the extraordinary language that enriches our lives,” said Matende.
