Police have arrested four suspects in separate motor vehicle theft and robbery cases in Bulawayo and Mutoko, recovering stolen vehicle parts, a robbed Honda Fit and an air gun allegedly used in the commission of one of the offences.
In Bulawayo, Anisto Nkanyiso Nyoni (32) and Alfred Mthunzi (33), both of Emganwini, appeared before Tredgold Regional Court B on July 17, 2026, facing two counts of motor vehicle theft.
In a statement, Criminal Investigations Department (CID) spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, said the pair’s arrest followed investigations by detectives from the CID Vehicle Theft Squad after receiving information on July 10 linking them to the theft of a Honda Fit stolen from Nketa 9 Shopping Centre on June 24.
“Acting on the information, detectives conducted follow-up investigations which culminated in the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of two motor vehicle gearboxes.
“Investigations established that the suspects allegedly used an unknown object to start the motor vehicle before driving it away. The vehicle was recovered the following day abandoned in Upper Rangemore, Bulawayo.
“It had been stripped of its gearbox, radiator and three wheels, while the front bumper had also been damaged,” said Det-Insp Muteweri.
She said further investigations linked the suspects to another vehicle theft that occurred on June 19.
“After allegedly stealing the vehicle, the suspects removed its gearbox before abandoning it along the Bulawayo-Plumtree Road,” she said.
Nyoni and Mthunzi were remanded in custody to July 27 for the setting of a trial date.
Police are also hunting for three other suspects, identified as Munashe Ndlovu, Joramu Mpofu and John, in connection with the investigations.
Meanwhile, detectives from CID Murehwa arrested Nigel Tafadzwa Nyamuzinga (21) and Godknows Divas Zisengwe (26), both of Mutoko, in connection with the robbery of a motor vehicle in Murewa on July 11.
Det-Insp Muteweri said the two allegedly approached the complainant pretending to hire his Honda Fit for transport to Nyahuni before robbing him of the vehicle during the journey.
Following a tip-off received on July 15 about a suspicious Honda Fit parked at Mutoko Business Centre without registration plates, detectives tracked down the vehicle and arrested the suspects.
“A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of the stolen registration plates concealed in the boot. Recovered also was an air gun used in the commission of the crime.
“The suspects appeared at Mutoko Court on July 17, 2026, where they were remanded in custody,” she said.
