VENDORS previously selling their wares at a market close to Harare Charge Office yesterday bemoaned their eviction on short notice by the Zimbabwe Republic Police recently. Some of the vendors had traded their wares for years at the flea market.
The vendors were ordered off the market earlier month. When the flea market was shut down, national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba cited security reasons.
The vendors are now operating illegally on pavements along Robson Manyika Avenue and Julius Nyerere Way. The flea market area was a ZRP officers’ parking lot before it was turned into a flea market.
One of the vendors, who was selling clothes along Robson Manyika Avenue said ZRP gave them short notice without considering their welfare.
“The ZRP should have taken into consideration where the vendors will go and provide them with an alternative solution before evicting them from the Charge Office flea market area.
“They said the reason behind our eviction wasprecipitated by the lack of parking area for officers and impounded vehicles,”, added the vendor. The vendors are now a menace along Robson Manyika and Julius Nyerere where they are almost blocking the roads.
