SOUTH African sensation DJ Ganyani has challenged his Bulawayo counterparts to grow into music producers as their profession has evolved.Speaking on the sidelines of a press conference on Tuesday, Ganyani said it was important for DJs to up their game and make themselves known through their talent.

“I would like to encourage the local DJs to venture into music production.  This is because it will help you elevate your career as a DJand make you known to the fans,” he said. He added: “Deejaying is a career but it is not as strong as it used to be. Music production has taken over now so if guys have their own products they can give their demos to visiting DJs like myself and Oskido.”

Last week Oskido said: “The DJ world has evolved and DJs have to be innovative and know what they are doing. It’s no longer business as usual but we now have to produce our own songs in order to stay alive.”

Reinforcing Oskido’s sentiments, Ganyani said he was not approached by any local DJ with regards to music production, as he had expected.

“The last time I was here I didn’t get approached by any local DJ. There wasn’t that heart for music production back then and hopefully today when I leave I will have music from the guys this side,” said Ganyani.

He encouraged artistes from Bulawayo and Zimbabwe to attend the annual South African Music Conference. “The conference is held annually and I encourage DJs especially to make their way there and share ideas with others. They should bring their demos so that they share their music with other Djs from around Africa,” said Ganyani.

In response, Bulawayo’s DJ Mpho said local DJs appreciated the importance of growing bigger and had demos. However, he said they wanted guarantees that their music would not be used without acknowledgement. “Some of us have demos, but what guarantee is there that when I give you the samples you will not steal my music?” he asked.
