Veteran broadcaster’s wife of 62 years dies

VETERAN broadcaster Mr Amon Nyamambi’s wife of 62 years Mrs Benigna Eva Nyamambi, has died.

She was 83.

Mr Nyamambi, who was known on the airwaves as Maqhulayibambe, led the popular Ndebele language Radio Mthwakazi in the 1970s which was well known for the drama Sakhelene Zinini and many other programmes.

Mr Nyamambi (91) said his wife had been suffering from pancreatic cancer.

“I’m at a loss of words following the death of my wife. She died at home on Saturday mid-afternoon at 3.35PM. I have lost the love of my life, my rock and my life partner for 62 years,” said Mr Nyamambi.

The couple married on September 5, 1959, and were blessed with six children, Busani (deceased) Bulisaninkosi (deceased), Bekithemba Ben, Bekezela, Bhekimpilo and Bethule and eight grandchildren. 

Mr Nyamambi said funeral arrangements are yet to be finalised, as they are waiting for the arrival of their children from overseas.

Mrs Nyamambi was a retired school teacher who was born on November 23, 1939 in Zvishavane.

She moved to Bulawayo when she was eight-year-old. She learnt at Luveve Primary School up to standard six, went to Empandeni for teacher training and trained at Monte Casino in Domestic Science.

Mourners are gathered at 3928 Luveve 4 suburb in Bulawayo.
