Veteran nationalist Nkala dies

Zanu founder member and former Cabinet minister Cde Enos Nkala has died. Cde Nkala (81) died at the Avenues Clinic in Harare in the early hours of Wednesday after having been ill for some time. Zanu-PF secretary for administration Cde Didymus Mutasa confirmed the death, saying the party was saddened.

“We learnt with great sadness this morning of the death of Cde Enos Nkala who was one of the founding members of Zanu.

“We want to pass our condolences to the Nkala family over this great loss and affirm that we will be with them during this time of mourning.”

Cde Mutasa said the Zanu-PF Politburo now awaits a request from Bulawayo province to pronounce his hero status.

Meanwhile, Vice President Joice Mujuru has described Cde Nkala as a revolutionary icon who played a pivotal riole in the liberation of the country.

In an interview at State House, VP Mujuru said she learnt of his death with shock.
“He is one of the nationalists that also contributed to my being during the liberation struggle…an icon of the revolution,” she said.

Added VP Mujuru: “I knew of him being not well a while ago. I had a chat with Herbert Nkala in my office. He wanted me to know he was no longer i Bulawayo but in Harare. We wanted to vist him this morning at 10:00am only to be told before 7:30am that Cde Nkala was no more,” she said.
