A NKULUMANE man will spend the next six years behind bars after robbing a pedestrian of cash and a cellphone in Bulawayo.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) confirmed that Dumiso Dube (26) was convicted and sentenced by the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court following the violent robbery on 30 July.
According to the state, the victim was walking along an unnamed road in Tshabalala around 4:30PM when Dube and two accomplices — still on the run — pounced.
“The accused person was driving a blue Honda Fit. One of the offenders disembarked and greeted the victim as if he knew him,” the NPAZ said in a statement.
“When the victim ignored him, the offender threatened to stab him with an okapi knife before searching his trousers.”
The gang stole a wallet containing US$800 and a Samsung J4 Core cellphone before speeding off.
The quick-thinking victim sought help from a passerby, and together they chased down the robbers, eventually blocking their getaway car.
“During the scuffle, the victim managed to grab the offender’s cellphone which he handed over to the police,” read the statement.
The stolen cash and phone were not recovered.
Police are hunting for the two accomplices as the crackdown on violent crime continues.
