Victory Day: Commemorating 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War

Victory Day is one of the most important and revered holidays in the Russian Federation, commemorating suppression of the German Nazis, who conquered practically the whole Europe and attacked the USSR, which Russia inherits to.

Russia bows before more than 27 million of Soviet people who lost their lives, pays tribute to the courage and the strength of spirit of the war veterans for the immortal example of unity and love for the Motherland.

The war was unleashed by Germany on June 22, 1941. The enemy came to kill, sow death and pain, horror and innumerable sufferings.

It wanted not only to overthrow the political order and the Soviet system but to destroy the Nation, wipe our people off the face of the earth.

The Soviet troops immediately began to suffer huge losses. However, they managed to stop the German Nazis on the way to Leningrad, Moscow and Novgorod. In 1942, the major counter-attack of the Soviet troops began, which yielded significant results.

The Red Army pushed the front line back towards the west and in 1943-1945 continued reconquering the captured territories.

In January 1943, the blockade of Leningrad was lifted, and by 1944, the Soviet troops moved towards Poland, and then to Germany.

On May 8, Berlin was taken, and the German troops declared unconditional surrender. Victory Day unites both young and old people of Russia.

Each family can tell the stories of their grandfathers and great-grandfathers who have defended the freedom not only of the Soviet Union, but also of Europe.

Fewer veterans remain alive and can personally tell their stories to the young generation.

Victory Day is an opportunity to pay tribute to all who fought or worked in the rear during wartime.

How do Russians celebrate their victory

Victory Day is a public holiday in Russia. According to the tradition of recent years, St. George ribbons are distributed everywhere by volunteers, which not only veterans but also young people wear as a symbol of the connection between generations and the memory of the Great Victory.

On this day, flower and wreath laying ceremonies are held everywhere at monuments for the heroes of the Great Patriotic War.

The biggest military parade takes place in Red Square in the very heart of Moscow.

Also, various events are held to honour war veterans and rear front workers, festive concerts are organised, courage lessons in schools are conducted and reconstruction of battles are held in some places.

The tradition of recent years is the patriotic action called “Immortal Regiment”, which has become an international public movement to preserve the personal memory of the generation of the Great Patriotic War.

Participants of the movement walk through villages, towns and cities with photos of their relatives.

History requires making conclusions and learning lessons but, regrettably, there are attempts to put the ideology of Nazis back into life.

Today we observe gatherings of die-hard castigators, their followers, attempts to rewrite history, justify traitors and criminals who have their hands soaked in the blood of hundreds of thousands of civilians.

There is much evidence confirming that the West played a leading role in training the ultra-radical and neo-Nazi units in Ukraine to insert them into the regular Ukrainian troops.

To eradicate the Nazi scourge and to defend the people of the Donbass region from neo-Nazis who flourish in today’s Ukraine is one of the goals of the Special military operation by the Russian Federation.
