In an unprovoked attack, a Makoni villager recently fatally assaulted a 71-year-old village head in full view of his two minor granddaughters.
Lawrence Mashava (32) of Madondo Village in Rugoyi has since been arrested for allegedly killing Mr Issac Madondo when he assaulted him with a walking stick and a metal tin.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Norbert Muzondo confirmed the incident, saying Mashava targeted the late traditional leader’s head in the attack and only stopped after the arrival of other villagers.
“On March 22, Mashava went to Madondo’s homestead to collect his empty sack. He found the now late Mr Madondo in a kitchen hut with his two minor grandchildren aged eight and nine respectively.
“Mr Madondo assigned one of his grandchild to give Madondo the sack. When the accused was given the sack, he remained standing in the kitchen hut since he was drunk.
“Mr Madondo ordered Mashava to leave the kitchen. Mr Madondo pushed Mashava and the accused grabbed his (Mr Madondo)’s walking stick and started assaulting him all over the body with it until he fell down,” said Inspector Muzondo.
It is alleged that Mashava took a tin filled with clay soil and hit Mr Madondo several times on the head.
Mr Madondo’s grandchildren screamed for help and their grandmother, Mrs Rebecca Madondo (68) and other villagers rushed to the scene.
Mashava fled from the scene.
“They rushed Mr Madondo to Makoni Rural Hospital where he was transferred to Rusape General Hospital. He was pronounced dead upon arrival. A report was made to the police, leading to Mashava’s arrest,” said Inspector Muzondo.
Inspector Muzondo warned members of the public against alcohol and drug abuse which he said is contributing to an increase in crimes which can be avoided.
