Vocational sport to be introduced

SPORT and Recreation Minister Makhosini Hlongwane says the government will soon include sport as part of the country’s vocational training centres’ curriculum to ensure that talent is not lost before reaching its full potential. Addressing Midlands’ provincial sport associations at the Gweru Polytechnic yesterday, Hlongwane said his ministry had realised that a lot of good athletes that were not gifted academically were lost once they dropped out of the school system.

“Once that person reaches Form 4, he drops out of the system and we lose talent despite the fact that he would have been the best footballer in the school or in another sporting discipline. We’ve therefore introduced vocational sport where such an athlete enrols at a vocational training centre to pursue their talent because sport is a life skill,” said Hlongwane.

“My short stint at the Ministry of Sport and Recreation has revealed deep structural faults within the pillars of what should be a solid sport and recreation sector. The obvious threat posed by this structural misalignment has spurred my ministry to immediately engage in wide consultations with key players across the length and breadth of sport and recreation industry.”

Presenting his state of sport in the province report, Sport and Recreation Commission coordinator for Midlands Simon Masaka said sport was on a downward spiral in the province because provincial structures in place do not cascade down to the districts and other lowers structures.

Holngwane is on a tour of the country’s 10 provinces and will be in Gwanda this morning before heading to Manicaland.
