LOCAL performing arts group, Amasiko Lemvelo Learning Trust’s Sunduza Dance Theatre, is excited about the invitation to perform at the DOADOA the East African Performing Arts Market festival in Kampala, Uganda in May.
That is the news from the group’s creative director Leroy Sibanda in an interview with the Sunday leisure last week ahead of the group’s post Valentine show dubbed revival of, Voices from the Rocks — The story of Matopos, to be premiered at the Bulawayo Theatre.
“Sunduza Dance Theatre has been active showcasing at the Arterial Network in Cape Town in 2013 and most recently at DOADOA the East African Performing Arts Market in Kampala where we will take our productions in May 2016 at the invitation of the Festival’s director” said Sibanda.
The group had been for a decade in limbo following economic challenges which rocked the country when the group’s leadership had been teaching children in the United Kingdom.
With the group’s major last performance at the Zimbabwe International Book Fair in 2004, it has taken the group a few years to rejuvenate and get geared.
Sunduza means to push and with the resurgence of the Voice from the Rocks, a story by Professor Terence Ranger based on the land in microcosm Sunduza Dance Theatre promises new and eccentric performance.
“We would do 12 traditional dance styles like Isitshikitsha, Amabhiza, Mande and all our productions are locally made and reflect our lifestyles, history and culture. Amasiko Lemvelo and Sunduza will be showcasing more productions this year,” added Sibanda.
